What it’s All About
You’ve probably heard terms like “free enterprise,” “free markets,” and “capitalism” thrown around both in the news and in your life on campus. But what do these things really mean? How do they make life better for the average American and Arizonan? And what impact does public policy have in ensuring you and your community are able to prosper in a free enterprise system?
The Common Sense Institute (CSI) Arizona is a non-partisan research organization that employs economists to study these issues. CSI Arizona, in partnership with the University of Arizona Center for the Philosophy of Freedom, invites you to learn to talk about why a free enterprise system matters, in both a global and personal context.
Enjoy lunch on us, hear from CSI Arizona’s Executive Director Katie Ratlief and ask questions like, “What is Free Enterprise, and why should Wildcats care?”
Special Speaker

Katie Ratlief currently serves as Executive Director for the Common Sense Institute Arizona (CSI-AZ). CSI-AZ is a non-partisan research organization focused on developing sound fiscal policy, promoting economic prosperity and guided by the belief that Arizona’s continued economic growth must be supported by research that isn’t partisan or political.
Prior to joining CSI-AZ, Katie served in former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s administration for six years. She served as Director of Legislative Affairs, Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff. In these roles, she led the governor’s legislative, policy and budget teams. She is proud to have worked to secure the nation’s first universal license recognition law, the largest income tax cut in state history, the first universal school choice bill in the country, and a $1.4 billion investment in the state’s water resiliency.
In the community, Katie serves on the governing board of ASU Prep, a network of high performing charter schools preparing low-income students for college and career success. She is an elder at her church, and an alumnae of the American Enterprise Institute’s Leadership Network.
Katie received her B.A. in Economics and Political Science and her J.D. from the University of Arizona. She lives in Phoenix, with her husband Casey and their dog Betsy.
